MacBook doesn't go past log in screen

Hi

I have a problem with my MacBook. Recently iphoto kept freezing whilst looking through pictures, then eventually crashed. Kept trying it over and over and it did the same thing. Then firefox started crashing too. Restarted my MacBook and I got to the log in page. Entered my password but it then froze on the blue screen. Tried booting in safe mode but it didn't get past that point either.

Any ideas on how to solve this ?

Any weird noises? Try running disk utility from the boot dvd that came with your macbook

Nope no weird noises. Sometimes when I try to log on, on the blue screen I'll get a message say an application has crashed and do I want to relaunch it again (can't because I can't click on the options though).

Think I may have to reformat? Or archive and install?

I'll give that a go though thanks.
