MacBook drive dead, external drive dead!

About a week ago, my 6 week old Seagate Freeagent pro backup drive hung just after backing up - the backup had finished - its an rsync script, and it had returned to the prompt, but i went into the backup directory and tried to 'ls' and it just hung.. i tried using finder and the same. In the end i had to restart the machine. After that it wouldnt mount the external drive. Seagate support havent got back to me yet, so i need to chase that up...

But on saturday night my MacBook itself totally hung.. had to reset it, and it wont boot now.. i get the disk icon with the question mark. Tried in the install DVD and disk utility doesnt even show the drive.

I really hope one of these drives is recoverable!. I do have my documents backed up online, and some photos on websites - but not all my photos, and not the orginals (usually smaller copies).

So this post is partly to ask, any ideas on things to try? and also a warning that backing up to multiple places is probably a good idea!
