Not so long back my macbook started failing to burn dvds in toast. after a few toast updates not correcting the issue i did a bit of googling and read about this dodgy drive firmware update that apple have failed to correct and started to wonder if id been hit by it.

According to my hardware overview i have a matshita uj-857 hbea drive.

I really dont know where the problem lies. i hope somebody can help me out with some ideas i can try. can i replace the drive easily enough for a better brand? (last resort obviously).

can i flash a working firmware to this drive? if so where can i get it?

DVD burning solution

I used to have problems burning and converting DVDs until I stumbled across and awesome program. It's called total video2dvd. It converts, authors and burns avi files to dvd and a lot more. Go to www.effectmatrix.com I'm pretty sure there's a free download there.
