Hi,

Am I right in thinking that the display output on my Early 2009 MacBook is a MiniDVI connector?

If so, does anyone here know how I might go about obtaining one of them (to a male HDMI connector)...

Well, that was rude. If you didn't notice, I asked two questions. This serves to answer none.

The mini-DVI to HDMI adapter is easy to find.
Here's one - http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=4852
I looked for male HDMI, and couldn't find any.
But, it is an HDMI female adapter, so just add a male to male HDMI cable.

That looks like a US only site. I'm in the UK, and when searching, can only seem to find either exceptionally expensive ones, or none at all (results are mostly mini-DisplayPort).

Also, I'm not 100% sure if it is a mini-DVI...

Yes, your Early 2009 MacBook (MacBook5,2) would have mini-DVI as an output.
Apple did go to the mini DisplayPort connector in the Late 2009 MacBook (MacBook6,1)

I checked at Amazon UK. They stock the same Monoprice cable
£2.68, less than half price. Is that good for you?

They also appear to have a cable that is mis-identified as mini-DVI to HDMI female.
It appears in the picture as a mini-DVI to HDMI male, 2 meters in length, and looks correct in the picture. The text clearly says "female", but even that would be of some use to you, I think, even if it turns out to be the female HDMI. If you really want the HDMI male, then it might be worth the 6 quid to try one...

No it wasn't rude. A simple search gave me all the answers.
Maybe a little rude - When you decided what the question was, and then gave an "answer" that helped you, but not the OP.
You could have read the (pretty short) post more carefully before delivering what looked like a snarky response.

I've got one I was going to throw away. Its a mini DVI to DVI cable, then a DVI to HDMI cable. I'm in the UK too. Message me if you're interested. I'd only be after the price of posting it.
