macbook, external display question

i have my macbook set up with a Dell monitor, using it as a desktop type computer and a notebook (from time to time)

my question: is there a way to sort of "save" settings such as window size and placement as i switch from using the macbook itself, and then plugging it up to a monitor.

really is no big deal, but it can get kind of annoying whenever i'm using my macbook at a coffee shop or where ever and then plugging it up to my monitor at home, and having to resize all my windows to fit right with the monitor.

looking for any tips or tricks.
