Macbook external monitor out of range error only when lid closed

Sorry if this is an old question, but I seem to have a strange problem.

Basically the external monitor works when the Macbook lid is open - but if I close the lid, putting the Macbook to sleep, then wiggle the mouse to awaken the Macbook, the external monitor displays an "Out Of Range" error.

I can't see why it would work one moment and not the next depending whether the lid is closed or open - I've not had this problem before.

Any pointers gratefully received.

Have you tried resetting the PRAM?

While you're at it, you might try resetting the SMC too.
