My macbook just slid off the couch onto the rug on tiled floor and now when i wake it up or turn it on the hard drive makes the worst noise for a few seconds. Do i need to take it in somewhere to get it checked out and replace it or is there something i can do to try and fix it? It's an aluminium macbook, bought at the start of this year.

You could try to replace just the hard drive. Your hard drive has moving parts, something clearly got whacked. First, back up your data, you should do this literally right now. Next, replace the hard drive and hope that is all that is wrong.
