So, my shiny new macbook arrived yesterday. At first, I was cautiously optimistic as reading these forums (which, understandably, emphasize the negative) admittedly made me a tad paranoid about Apple being out to destroy me with a faulty laptop. I'm happy to report that the computer was, upon initial inspection, flawless.
No loose battery cover... no nicks in screen... no dents... no scratches... function keys straight... everything looks great on the outside.
So, I fire the best up, waiting for a problem. I was worried about the 4 gig problems that I've read about, but thus far everything seems fine. So far as I can tell, the computer is running at cool temperatures (according to iStat) and everything seems to be in order.
Specs: 2.4 GHz, 4GB ram, 128GB SSD
Maybe this isn't saying much coming from my old macbook, but this computer is pretty fast. The biggest difference in speed has been opening applications. Intellectually I knew that applications should open much faster with this hardware, but actually using the computer made it very real. I hit an icon in the dock and the app is up and running... very snappy.
Another thing that I found very interesting... I didn't realize just how much I paid attention to the harddrive in my old macbook for information. When I woke my macbook up from sleep this morning, I was worried that it was broken when I didn't here the hdd spinning up... it was a funny moment when the monitor (it's connected to a cheap ass LCD) came awake and I realized that I'd no longer hear the hdd.
Similarly, things somehow seemed off without the tiny vibrations of the hdd spinning up and slowing down in reaction to my commands when using the computer in my lap. It's a quaint experience.
I did experience one problem, however. I ordered a mini-display to dvi adapter with my computer such that I could hook it up to my LCD when I'm in my dorm room. Long story short, as others have reported, it was a no go. I took a trip to the Apple store to figure out what the problem was (my computer, the adapter, etc). Once the woman at the Apple Store determined that it was a problem between the computer and dvi output, she gave me a mini-display to vga adapter, which was a very cool thing to do. I don't know if that's standard practice, but somehow I doubt it.
Anyways, my one day review is this: the computer is fantastic. Also, I really don't know what people are talking about with the screen... I've used it to work and watch Everybody Loves Raymond at starbucks, a bagel shop, and the student center of my school and it looked great.
Peace
