Almost a year old without a hiccup
Suddenly:
Everything froze while in safari, no mouse nothing, turned it off with the power button. I get the chime and the screen lights up but no apple symbol. After a minute or two the fan turns on.
I tried the apple+option+r+p several times and only get a flashing folder with a ? mark.

Drive could have died.

If you boot to the CD, and cannot find the drive in Disk Utilities, it doesn't generally look too good.

If you have the Mac OS X Install disc, insert it into the drive. Restart.
As soon as the white light appears press the 'd' button on your keyboard!

This will run the hardware self test and should give you a clue to what's happening!

P.S.: By the sound of it, hope you're backed up!

c YA

Your drive is toast. Apple has sold MANY MacBooks with bad drives. Do a Google search on MacBook Hard Drive Failure. You won't believe your eyes.
My wife's computer went down yesterday as we were doing her first backup on Time Machine. How unlucky. MAKE SURE if you use TM, your computer does not go to sleep during this process, or you will be replacing your drive.

APPLE NEEDS TO MAKE GOOD ON THESE GARBAGE DRIVES THEY HAVE SELECTED TO USE.

crapola:(

When I do the restart holding the d it ejects the install disc. Subsequently the same file symbol with the ? mark appears.
I guess I'm off to apple repair as it's still under a year old.

crap!

I bought the new MB thinking it would be as good as my old 12" PB which I'm on now. The cd drive on it failed but the rest of the system works fine.

I'm not backed up so I'm going to loose some data.:(

unacceptable failure rate

I took my MB in and the diagnosis is a failed optic in the hard drive reader.
WTF?
As I look around I see this has happened to a lot of people.

Can't they find vendors who can supply them with a hard drive which lasts more than a few months???
This is a bit irritating.
Fortunately the stupid thing is still under warranty and I suppose I'll be buying apple extended care as a result.

D you remember the HDD name when you opened Disk Utility. Didi it start like Fujitsu MH..... or ST......

If it started as ST...., its Seagate and as far as I remember, there was a case sometime back (about an year or so) where the MacBooks shipped with plagued Seagates. Lots of problems like Bad Sectors, Drive head stick, Platter scratches, etc...

I get slightly more paranoid everyday I think. Mostly because I emigrated with my Macbook and there is little support here for these things.

added to the mag-safe burn-outs and case cracking incidents - I have fingers and toes crossed.

I am backing up my latest additions now.

Apple provides WORLDWIDE Warranty and even if there is an ant's support, You're good. Telling you on personal experience. iPod burned out while on a trip to Asia!

By the way, where are you located now?

I bought mine in the USA and apple service here in Thailand is great.

I'm just peeved that the dang thing failed after only a few months.

BTW:
I don't remember who the hardrive vendor was.:(

Yeah, its your drive that has seem to gone. You'll be amazed by the amount of people who have had the same problems
