Long story short: My Macbook Pro from August 2009 (os x 10.5) cannot see the hd and does not boot up. It froze during a Time Machine backup and I do not have an earlier one. Apple is going to replace and install a new hd free of charge. I'm going to encase the 'old' hd hoping to then access the data. I know this will probably will not work since the hd may be toast. There are files I would like to get back, though I don't need everything on it. No, I had not backed up my data before. Yes, that was really, really dumb.

Is there any way to get the files that TM did manage to back up? The drive is 160 gb, 5400, SATA, 2.5". The partial backup is 156 gb, if that means anything. I've read nothing anywhere that gives me hope of doing this but I figured I would check here.

Thank you for time and consideration.
