My wife was installing updates on her Macbook and it just froze up. All it shows now is her desktop photo and nothing else, no icons, no anything but the cursor, which works. Now what?
 
Restart, press the power button and choose restart if prompted, if nothing happens, hold the power button until it shuts off.

Thanks, that got it restarted, and it seems to be OK. I use my iPod and iPhone daily, but I'm stuck with PC's for my computing, so I'm out of touch on the newer Mac's.
 
What probably happened is Finder quit, but failed to restart on its own. These things can happen and I wouldn't worry about it unless it starts happening often.
