Hi there. I am running a white 2.4 GHz Intel core 2 Duo macbook with OS X 10.5.6 with 2GB of RAM. However, over the last few weeks it seems to hang continuously and seemingly at random.

The hangs seem to be completely random. Sometimes, for a few days at a time even, everything's fine, and I can run loads of apps at once fine. At other times it's hanging every 5 minutes, even when only using one app, like watching something in quicktime or checking emails. How it hangs is also random: sometimes just the one app will hang (not consistent; firefox, quicktime, mail, transmission, finder, football manager, safari all have been the first to hang), sometimes I can open Activity Monitor and wait a few seconds and everything's fine. Other times everything will freeze but the mouse can move, others only the dock is active, others even the mouse is frozen.

As far as I can remember I have not installed anything or changed my habits to cause the hanging.

I have tried reparing permissions, zapping pram, have run the apple hardware test, and have run rember once. Is it worth paying for Memtest as well?

Unlikely, but could I have installed a virus or suchlike by accident? There is no pattern of high CPU usage in activity monitor after the hangs, although firefox does usually use over 30 % which isn't ideal.

It is obviously very frustrating. Up until the constant hangs using my first mac has been brilliant.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: Some other stuff I forgot to mention. I have already tried setting up another account and seeing if the problems remain; they do. And sometimes when it's hanging a very quiet high pitched noise can be heard from within the laptop... I normally try and leave it to unhang by itself, although at times I am forced due to time constraints to hold the turn on/off button.

Cheers agan
