M3 Macbook Pro. Baldur's Gate 3 used to launch just fine from it's icon in the dock. But ever since an update -- not sure if it was an OS update or BG3 update, it will say something like "Baldur's Gate 3 closed unexpectedly" pretty much instantly after clicking on it's icon in the dock.

Now when I go into GOG Galaxy and choose the game and hitting "Play" it launches and plays just fine. Anyone else have this issue? And if so, is it an easy fix? I'm quite new to Mac's so I have no idea what the problem might be. It's pretty minor in that I can still play it -- just takes an extra couple of steps. But if I can get an easy solution, it would be great.

Thanks!

Yep, I tried removing it and when it gets added again to the dock, I still get that error when I launch from the dock.

How do you get it to point to the executable on a Mac?

Will the game launch at all?

Even from the folder containing it on your Mac?

It's probably some sort of GOG Galaxy issue. At least that's what I'm hearing from people saying that GOG Galaxy is pretty buggy on Mac's.

And since I am new to MacOS, how would I launch from the folder? Do I look for an .exe like Windows?

As of now, I can play the game. It's just that when I launch the icon from the dock, I get the error. I have go into GOG Galaxy and go into my own games and click on "Play". And that works for some reason. But when I click on the icon on the dock, it doesn't work for some reason. <shrug>

Welcome to the good side, mate! 🤣 I’m a lifelong Mac user, so here’s a high-level look that might be helpful. Every Mac app installs in the directory, even GoG Galaxy, and the quickest way to find it is to click on the “Macintosh HD” icon on your desktop.

Inside, you’ll see folders, the most important of which are labeled “users” and the name you gave when you set up your Mac.

First, click on your Mac name to open it, and you should see all the apps installed on your Mac. Among them should be GoG Galaxy. BG 3 might be there, too. Any app installed on your Mac can be launched from there, too.

As you’ve already learned, it seems like GoG Galaxy works like a launcher on your Mac, like Steam or Epic or Battle.net.

Do you see either BG 3 or GoG Galaxy in your Mac’s folder?

Oh, and before I forget: you may never need to see or interact with an exe file, because MacOS doesn’t use them, unless you’re doing some sort of emulation.

Try Heroic launcher! Fast and clean client that can replace GOG Galaxy and Epic Launcher. I use it with Crossover since both those launchers lack proper support for Crossover. You don't have to use it with Crossover though. It is a native stand-alone Apple Silicon client you can use to log in to those other stores to download and launch games. You can choose between Mac and Win versions of the games.

I will never use Heroic Launcher, even if it was the last site online for any game resource!!!

Their Discord mods/devs/coders wouldn’t know good customer service if it bit them on the ass!

Most developers aren't diplomats.

They are learning and fixing, though. I have it working on Steam Deck to run some games that are on GOG Galaxy and Epic Games Launcher. I've yet to try it on Mac or Windows.

While suffering through my exchange with their people, I kept thinking of that line from “Office Space”: “engineers arent good with customers “. Given that, these fools are not fixing anything!!

Every misunderstanding was mine, in their view, and this marked the first time being banned from any Discord!

Have you ever been banned from a Discord?

I told them that they were poorly suited to actually help people.

So, screw them and I will actively advocate against them going forward.

While I can understand your attitude based on your negative experience I can’t comment on their support on Discord. I don’t use Discord and I think it’s fair to keep things separated a bit. The launcher works well for me and is very stable, clean and fast in contrast to the Epic launcher. I’m not going to sacrifice the fun I can have with all the free Epic games for the bad customer support on Discord that I don’t even need or use. As I said GOG Galaxy and Epic launcher don’t even run in Crossover so Heroic is the one and only working solution that does the job with ease and no problem.

I just hope that you never have to ask them any questions at all, because their Discord is all they have. No email, nothing on their website, nor on their GitHub.

Sorry it took me a couple of days to get back to you. Finally have some time to play BG3 and try some of your solutions.

First of all, thanks all for the help! Still having some issues, but at least I know more than I did before.

When I try to launch Baldur's Gate 3 from the Applications folder or drag it to the dock and launch from there, it keeps giving me the "Baldur's Gate 3 closed unexpectedly.." error. I mean it appears very quickly when I click on it. The game only seems to run when I go into GOG Galaxy and find my owned games, click on Baldur's Gate 3 there and choose "Play". Then it launches and runs just fine.

Just don't quite understand why I simply can't launch it from my Applications Folder or from the icon on the dock.

Nope. Tried about everything. Other than redownload the game, which I don't want to do since it took about 6 1/2 hours with my internet connection. So I just keep trying until some sort of fix gets done. And then when it fails, I just go into GOG and launch it from there.

Like in your case, it was running fine until an update. But I don't know what it was -- either an OS update or a patch for the game. I had both updates at about the same time.

And ever since then it has crashed immediately after clicking the icon on the dock.

Have you tried 14.6?

Well, just upgraded to 14.6. And nothing seems to have changed. Still crashes when I click on the the BG3 icon on the dock.

Hopefully at some point this will be fixed.

Just wanted to chime in. I looked up into the executable files as suggest in this thread and they might be right. The problem is there are two executable files, and only one of them actually launches the game. Now, why is this happening only now, if it was a GOG decision to make it his way or just the way the new Patch was made I don't know. But here's how I was able to launch it without using GOG:

Go to your Applications folder
Right click BG3 and select "Show package contents"
Navigate to Contents > MacOS
You'll see "Baldurs Gate 3" and "Baldurs Gate 3 GOG" unix exec files.
Click Baldurs Gate 3 GOG

It'll launch a terminal window who will then launch the game.
I'm sure someone more savvy will know a better way to solve this and link the dock shortcut to the correct executable, but for now that's what I have.

I was having this same issue after Sonoma update + Game Update + GoG Galaxy update. Wasn't sure which update broke it, but I think it is GoG update as @lunatic94 mentioned, there are two unix exec files and only the "Baldur's Gate 3 GOG" works. I am guessing GOG want to force the users to use their client to launch the game rather than launch the game on its own.

When I looked at the error report after the crash, the path of the "Baldur's Gate 3.app" was pointing to the "/Contents/MacOS/Baldur's Gate 3" not "Baldur's Gate 3 GOG". So I tried swapping the names of the two files and it is able to launch using the "Baldur's Gate 3.app" in Application folder. But, if you try to launch the game from GOG client, it will fail... but if you press "Reopen" it will open the game.

So for now, you can either launch the game via GOG client or edit the names in the /Contents/MacOS/ folder to launch directly from the application folder (or dock)

If anyone knows how to change the path of .app file you can probably solve this completely and be able to launch game game from both the application folder and the GOG client.
