Macbook HD help needed

My daughters old macbook died (video screen) so I just bought a used laptop from internet.
Took her old hard drive out and put in the used macbook I bought.
Turned it on and it asked for password. (GREAT).. could not find her so I held the power button down to shut it of.. it did not shut off so I unplugged it.
I did not full install it (with screws) so I reseated the harddrive and screwed it all back together.
Now it comes up with the apple screen with a scrolling bar under.. I wait and it asks me for the language I wish to set up the mac with.. (OH OH..) Tried to reset .. does the same..

Did I just format over her hard drive??.. I did not tell it to..
Can I get her info back?

Found out it is a password recovery screen. Selecting english on the first screen then leads to a second apple id password reset menu where i chose reset computer.. it then booted to the correct password screen.. problem resolved..
