MacBook interface smoother while using mirroring off

hey guys so i was just using my 2014 macbook pro 15" on my asus monitor(1080p) and when i turn mirroring off i noticed that the animations were smoother like opening launchpad opening mission control was smoother! i am using yosemite beta so i was thinking is it because the retina display is more demanding and the iris pro in my macbook cant handle it?
