I'm pretty sure it's the logic board. Boot it up and it whizzes away and stays with a screen of eternal blackness, no responsiveness from the keyboard or anything.

I've also got a CD stuck in the drive I'm pretty keen on getting out, anyway of going about it?

Press and hold the eject key as it is attempting to boot. It might pop the disk out.

If that fails try pressing the trackpad button on booting, this is also a shortcut for ejecting the disk.

I would also try resetting the PRAM and SMC. Might try your macbook back into life.

Should have mentioned I've done all of those and still nothing happens!

Worse thing as I really cant afford any repair right now.

Should have added it's also out of warrenty unfortunately.

Just opened up the top case and unsurprisingly it's covered in ****, where's a good guide to try cleaning the thing? I do have some rubbing alcohol handy if required.

Also a guide on opening thing properly? It's a 13" 1.83ghz Macbook, circa 2006

Mr Clean magic erasers do wonders on iBook and MacBook plastics.

Ah, ta.

I've got it opened up anyway, got my CD out, hoorah.

Just removed the heatsink and the paste is everywhere on the CPU/GPU, that wouldn't be the main cause of it going down would it?

Right, applied new paste and everything, and still doesn't work. On startup the cd eject just goes off and thats it. From just plugging in the connection between keyboard and logic board the fan still works.

Any suggestions?
