MacBook Issue

Hi im new to the forum and to mac systems.

I have an old macbook, its a hand-me down. I wanted to restore it to factory setup..clean hard drive etc. What I've done/happened so far:

-Inserted the OS X Install CD
-Chose: Install OS X & Bunddled Apps
-Screen turned gray and a Folder w/ a ? mark starts blinking for a really long time.
-Decided to take CD out after a while of waiting.
-Screen stayed the same w/ the blinking folder.
-Turned off & on the notebook, screen's still the same....

Any help would be very much appreciated.
As for the version of OS and whatnot..i dont remember..

Try holding the Option key when you power up.

I did that but then it asked for what im guessing is a password to continue..which i dont know the password..

Do it with the OS X install disc in the computer. Then select the install disc when given a choice.
