would anything detrimental happen by turning the macbook pro over on to its lid to access the bottom. I guess thats how apple get into them but wondered weather the screen supports the weight alright.

You answered your own question.

It's meant to be carried around in backpacks or travel cases squised with books, papers, whatever.

It can support it's own weight just fine.

Of course the lid can support the weight.
