Macbook (mid-2009) sleep issue

I have an external monitor via mini-DVI to VGA adaptor and external HD via USB. The computer will wake from sleep and fire up the monitor and occasionally the HD after the macbook is already running and the monitors have gone to sleep. Which is what I am guessing running a time machine. I have thought about just shutting the system down at night, but would prefer OS X to be up 24/7.

What to do?

Wake for network access is unchecked in the energy saver system preference.
