Should work right?

Well I've connected everything, then my Mac desktop picture changed to the default one, and then thats all i see on my TV. No mouse, no finder, no dock etc

I've tried playing movies too and that makes no difference, all I get on my TV is the default Mac desktop background?!

It may be due to the ability of your MacBook to extend the desktop instead of just mirroring the MacBook's display.

Go into System Preferences > Displays > Arrangement and see where the second monitor is arranged to or if the Mirror Displays checkbox is checked.

Image represents an older version of Mac OS X, but the content is still there, just visually upgraded.


PS: If the external display is set to mirror the internal one, the external will not give you a greater resolution than it might be capable of as the MB is tied down to 1280x800 pixel.
