Hey guys, I've had an on going issue with connecting external displays to my Unibody Macbook (Late 2008). It started when I accidentally turned on my macbook in clamshell mode (moved bluetooth mouse and it turned on), it went crazy, restarted, froze, etc. and then no longer connected my macbook to my external monitor (Mini displayport to hdmi). Then I started using my old mini displayport and usb to hdmi converter and that worked for a while until it once again stopped working. I got a new cable and it just wont even connect now.

When I plug in the mini displayport to hdmi cable into my macbook the screen flashes as if another monitor has connected but then nothing happens. I cant drag my mouse over, it does not show the monitor under detected displays, nothing. Yes, the external monitor is set to the right input (lol).

When I try to turn on my macbook with the external monitor plugged in, my macbook doesnt even turn on, it just freezes on boot up. This never used to happen before. (Graphics card error?)

The equipment I am working with:

2.4 Ghz 13.3" Unibody Macbook (Late 2008)
OSX Lion 10.7.2 (Issue happened with Snow Leopard too)
24" Benq G2420HD Monitor
Mini Displayport to HDMI cable

Note: Cable and monitor work fine, I tested them on my sisters macbook pro. Just found out my Apple Care ended about 20 days ago...what a bummer if I need a repair.

I have an Genius appointment set up on Tuesday, but I am just wondering if anyone here knows if this is a hardware or software issue...
