Yesterday I woke up to dreaded folder with question mark. My 2012 MacBook Pro won't boot up. I did command R key press, after that tried to repair startup disk but it was not able to.
After that I got a USB 3 disc which is greater in size than my startup disk. I, using command R installed Mac osx on this new USB disk. Ran migrant assistant to get my stuff off from internal hdd. After that finished set up Macbook as asked by osx. But after setting up apple id etc,all I got was grey screen.
Restarted then I got a circle with a line through it.
So I m frustrated and stuck, don't know what can I do to fix this. If someone can help me that would be awesome.

Also everything I press command R key it goes to Internet recovery mode. Second thing I had El Capitan installed but when going to reinstall options all I get is option to install Lion.

The default reinstall is the original OS your machine came with I'm afraid. Can't help on the issue though it sounds fairly catastrophic

Now my main concern is to recover my stuff from hdd and get in a new hdd
