Haven't used my macbook in 6 months, turned on while it was plugged in and after couple hrs its still saying not charging as soon as i unplug the cord it dies. do i need to replace the battery bought my macbook in oct 2010. Is there any steps i need to take before replacing the battery

This is a common problem. Long periods (i.e. days, weeks) of closed lid macbooks will destroy the battery. Googling "Dead battery macbook" will show you all kinds of threads.

Go ahead an replace the battery!

It's possible the battery is dead. How much charge did you have on it when you stopped using it? Try resetting the SMC. Also, see the link for troubleshooting MagSafe adapters at the bottom of the CHARGING section of the following link. If neither helps, take it to Apple. This should answer most, if not all, of your battery/charging questions:
