macbook (old style) has no os - what should i do?

A generous friend gave me an old macbook with no operating system on it. I believe it's the "old style" macbook, but I'm not exactly sure. Anyhow, I want to buy osx 10.4 but have no idea where to get this. Will a used copy of 10.4 work? I just want to type book reports for school. thanks.

"Old style" isn't much help. Is it white plastic? What size is the screen measured diagonally from corner to corner? Is it widescreen or closer to square?

Thanks for your reply. I just measured it and it's about 13 inches or so. The screen is a square shape and the outer cover is all white. It is an intel core 2 and it has 2ghz, 2gb memory, and 250gb. I hope this helps.
