Where is the best (cheapest) place to buy a replacement Macbook power adapter? A friend has a 3 year old macbook the needs a new magsafe version adapter (it's frayed on the wire an inch near the laptop end).

I've heard 3rd party versions are ok, what companies are dependable?

There are no authorized third-party adaptors, those that are out there are cheap Chinese fakes and are generally faulty at best, and hazardous at worst. I would only go Apple for those.

If the damage is not the result of abuse (cat chewing on the cord, yanking on it too hard, etc), then certainly take it by an Apple store and see if they'll replace it, I've had two replaced now for similar issues (though it's always right at the end, not an inch away, so probably slightly different causes).
