Hi folks. First post in this area of the forums. I'm mostly found over in the Early Intel forum.

My long suffering 2010 polycarbonate unibody MacBook is finally starting to give up, and some things just don't work at all anymore, due to patching it with Monterey while not having any Metal graphics support. I'm going in for a surgery this year after which I won't be able to lift more than five pounds, and it's jus a touch too heavy for that as well.

So I've started checking the local used market and I came across a 13" MacBook Pro 2015 (12,1) that looks like it would do nicely. Has the retina screen, Iris graphics, dual core i5, lots of ports. Seems perfect. 8GB of ram and the seller claims to have upgraded the 128GB SSD with a 500GB SSD (which I didn't realize was possible on these models). Comes with carrying cases, box, etc. $650 CDN. Some people are asking that much or more for a 2017 MacBook Air around here, which this machine absolutely buries.

This would be my first Mac that had a retina screen, no optical drive, etc. A newer Mac in other words. What are the known issues for these machines? Anything I should check out or look for? Recalls from Apple or issues that techs ran into with them? I don't have a lot of means so $650 is the high end of what I can afford, and I want to at least get a couple or few more years out of it. It can run Monterey natively, but I suspect if they move up the requirements again in subsequent macOS releases I'll go back to using OCPL, at least until Apple drops support for Intel entirely.

Thanks for reading and for any help you can offer folks. :)

On the plus side that MBP was before the butterfly keyboard so that will not be an issue. The Airs didn't get that keyboard until 2018 which may be why the 2017 Airs go for higher prices. Check battery condition as changing out the battery is a pain. The SSD is changeable but memory is not so you will be stuck with 8gb.

I have a 2015 Air for when I travel and it occasionally runs out of memory. Processor is usually adequate for the single task work I do on the small screen.
