Hi
I previously posted about the surface temperature of my new macbook pro 13" 2.4GHZ/16GB/512. I now have a second machine and it's identical. I downloaded amphetamine (for uninterrupted indexing) and three days later with only safari on and the CPU running around 95% idle I'm getting this:

How does this look to you guys?

Centre of keyboard is 44 degrees (111 degrees F) and palm rest as you can see above is 38.5. For me this is unacceptably hot.

I have found others on other forums mentioning the temp of the 13" but nothing much here. I bought the computer for logic which works the computer harder than this....

Technical support have no solutions — but does anybody here have feedback or even istat sensor comparisons?
I could exchange again but I'm starting to think this is expected behaviour which would be terribly disappointing.

Thanks for reading again everyone. I appreciate it.

Your temps seem quite usual..
Here are mine 2.4/8/256 with CPU idle 82% and ambient temp 20C (constant usage time about 1h)
EDIT: Forgot to mention. Mine is on a table.

Whats your ambient temperature? But yes, I see nothing out of ordinary or worrying here.

Thanks Valda. Great to be able to compare you stats. A few of your readings are hotter than mine interestingly. It's my palm rest though that is the problem — it seems proportionally higher than yours. Though my ambient temp is higher the fans should compensate for this I would have thought...
Thanks again

Thanks for the reply.
Around 28 degrees here in Summer. So I expected the fans to compensate. 44 degrees on the keyboard is not comfortable. I have a 2015 15" i7 and 2010 (!) 13" that are both fine to use for extended periods of time. This machine is much, much hotter to the touch.

Your temperatures are completely within the expected range and I’m surprised that you find your machine too hot to touch on idle. Modern compact 13” laptops reach temperatures of over 55C in the underside routinely. The CPU in your Mac is much more powerful than that if previous iterations and it will generate more heat in burst workflows - maybe that’s the reason why you notice elevated temps over the heat sink. At any rate, it’s not something that fans can compensate. If you truly find it unbearable I’d consider changing to something with a weaker CPU. But even then I’m not sure whether your be able to find what you seek - the 13” MBP is not a hot running laptop in comparison.

Thanks for this Leman. So you’re saying that mid/high 40s on the keys is expected when using say logic x (for example)?
That just can’t be right. I never said that the surface was too hot to touch but those sort of temperatures aren’t comfortable. If people are actually getting these temps and are happy with them then yes, I’ll have to change the model. Though as the CPU is actually not that hot I can’t see how a less powerful model would help. I’d Probably move to the 15” - which I know for a fact is cooler.
Thanks again, I appreciate your input.

I currently use my 2019 13" MBP (i5 2.4GHz, 16GB, 1TB) in the office, with an external Dell monitor (1929x1200 pixels) connected by HDMI to a Satechi TB3 dongle. The monitor shows Window 10 running in a Parallels VM with Outlook open. On the internal screen I have Safari with MacRumors, Mail, and same small add-ons (an analog clock, dropbox, iStat menus) open.

My ambient temperature is 24°C and iStat menses shows a CPU temp between 56 and 61°C. The palmrests are warm, but not uncomfortable. The Keyboard feels much warmer, but it never bothered my while typing. Here is what activity monitor and iStat menus show:

My 15" MBP from 2017 runs about 10°C cooler without an external monitor. With the external monitor the dGPU kicks in and the fans are on at an audible level most of the time. If I wouldn't use an external monitor, a 15" MacBook would be my choice anyways because of the larger screen.

P.S You can always set the min fan speed to 2000 or something... It should help, if the added noise is not a problem.
