MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid 2009)

It had an aging hard in it so I removed it and put in a brand new 1TB HGST.

Then booted system using a USB with OS X Sierra on it...The icon for "Install OS X Sierra" does come up but the minute you click on it you just get the greyed out prohibitory sign

Here is what I did already:

- Tried another USB with a proven / working installer OS X sierra file - no dice.
- Tried another HDD - a 1TB Toshiba - no dice.

Any ideas what it could be?

This may be of some use if you decide you do want to install despite being unsupported. However, results may vary and be erratic, so given El Cap is supported and extremely similar to Sierra, that might be the safer bet. YMMV.

Thanks CP and ZN. I was banging my head against the wall with this!

but an iMac of similar or older vintage will accept Sierra?

I have a 2007 imac and it can be made to take sierra just like your 2009 pro.

OK so i need update cpu first but all in hand.

The hack works well for most and many 2009 pro's work well after the hack.
Give it a go, if not the stick with el cap.

I prefer sierra myself hence my imac upgrade
