I have a 2020 Macbook 13" M1 (Not the Pro version). Unfortunately within just 3.5 years my touchbar is now flickering constantly and strobing bright white light. It's driving me nuts. I don't have applecare and from what I understand it's going to cost $500+ just to fix it. It's a common issue online, you would think they would just repair it. My last Mac lasted me 9 years, and I knew this touchbar was gonna be a problem.

So I am preparing on the chance that I need to get a new Mac. Ideally one without the touchbar. The M4 air looks like it will suit my needs, since it's just a daily driver, and no work is being done on it. But I was curious on what might be inferior on the M4 Air vs my 2020 M1?

I mainly want to be sure the display isn't going to look any worse than the one I am already using? I know it will have less battery and cooling. Thanks

The base M1 macbook pro had the same display panel as the m1 macbook air other than being 100 nits brighter. The M4 air matches the M1 MBP in that regards. If anything, the M4 air will look exactly the same if not better than the M1 pro.
The speakers on the pro though would sound better given they were on the sides, while in the air it is built under the hinge in the air.
You’ll even see a jump in performance in the M4 air given its higher benchmarks.

Get the M4 air with the maximum amount of RAM your budget allows. You should be set for a long time.

Just out of curiosity, have you checked iFixit to see if there’s a cheaper solution? Possibly a replacement or even a cable you could disconnect?

Ahh, I see. Thank you. I wasn't sure since they use so many different terms for their retina screens over the years. I feel like the Air has come a long way since it first released. I've been on Pro for the last 12 years and wasn't sure if I would miss it going to the Air.
