Trying to mount this laptop to my iMac via FW 800 in target mode. Does it not work? What was the point of including target mode if its not a working function?

Thanks

Yes, I do. I have the 800 cable connected to my iMac and it never shows up. It should mount like a firewire drive if all is working correctly. Wonder if I have a bad cable...?

If your MBP is booting up into the Mac OS, you didn't do it correctly. Is it not booting up?

the firewire icon should fill the MBP's screen once you've powered it on, if it is and its not showing up on the iMac, then something's wrong. I don't see why it shouldnt work though

Ok let me clarify, I service macs for a living. That being said I know all of the workings.

I am unable to mount a firewire drive with an 800 port on this laptop. I am also unable to mount the laptop into target mode on my desktop imac. My coworker is using an 800 to 400 cable and that is working. Is there a problem with 800-800 mounting on the iMac and MBP? Ive tried several cables...

I'd really also like to know if target disc mode works on the new MBPs.

The OP sounds like he knows what he's doing... has Apple somehow disabled this feature?
