I have the dreaded "battery drains during sleep if unplugged" problem that I have seen around with my macbook pro 13" touchbar late 2017. Basically in a few hours (a night pr example) a 100% charged battery goes down to 0%.
Before posting here I have been trying various solutions found in forums but nothing seems to work, it has been a few months...
So, here is the current status:
- battery health is good (tested with various tools)
- it discharges normally while in use
- it doesn't discharge if the macbook is shut down and unplugged (or plugged)
- it doesn't discharge if the macbook is sleeping and plugged
- I reset PRAM and SMC several times
- I did the diagnostic several times, no issues detected
- I reinstalled macos (monterey) from scratch (i.e. by using diskutil to redo partitions and reformat) a couple of times
- I've gone through all the disable this and that tricks (notifications, bt, wifi etc.)
- pmset -g pslog does not report any wake events during sleep (this makes me think to an hardware problem)
- the keyboard and battery were changed once because of the keyboard problem of those models (by an official apple authorized repair shop) , this issue started after that (I think...).
I went to the apple store, explained the problem, they did their diagnostics (that I guess go more in depth than the normal one?) and showed me no issues on their program (it was very quick, I couldn't make anything out of diagnostic messages or details, but they showed me green lights everywhere).
After they talked with a colleague for a bit they come back and said that the battery is in good health so it is not worth to change it (and I added that it might not fix the issue, they didn't confirm nor deny...)
So, I am going to try some last things this week end, the tcpkeepalive pmset setting because I am not sure I tried it, but in the mean time if anybody has ideas...
Also, when resetting the SMC I can't tell if it has actually been reset, I dont have any visual feedback when I do the ctrl+option+cmd+power keypress, any hints on that?
And what about the bluetooth module? I used to be able to reset it but I can't anymore...
Any help is much appreciated, thanks.
Edit:
I forgot to add that I experienced a few times this issue when I had to go some place with my mac. I would simply close it (no shut down) and put in my backpack, after a 30-40 min I would notice that the mac in the bag was very warm (as it was on but it wasn't actually and fans weren't spinning) and upon opening the lid and logging in I would see the usual battery drain.
