This is happeinig to my laptop when it uses the intel graphics card. Any ideas? It has only happened recenty after Mavericks update could be hardware/ software related.

The 2010's were known for this issue. We like to blame Nvidia, but in this case it's the i5/i7's iGPU that's at fault. It's not a software issue, but a hardware one. Apple was doing free goodwill repairs out of warranty for this. Take it to a genius bar and hopefully they're still making this warranty exception.
