I bought a macbook pro core i5 2.53ghz a week ago and the battery time is no where near the advertised battery time of 8-9 hours. What could be the reason for this? The max that i get is 5 hours.

It is heavily dependent on usage. You are probably using more programs that suck power than were used during the testing. Screen brightness and wifi can drain power quickly too. Turning wifi off and dimming the screen while playing chess only should increase battery time significantly.

Let's just put it this way.

The more heavily the computer is being used, the lower the battery life will be.

8-9hours is achievable when using apple's testing method which is somewhere in the fine print on the macbook pro's page.
