Hi all,
As stated I have a MBP 15" from the summer of 2006 (just prior to shipping off to school). Currently I am still running tiger 10.4.11 (ordered snow leopard recently, don't ask why i took so long).
It has performed faithfully for several years, but recently has been giving me issues. As some background, I had previously had bootcamp on this machine with xp installed, but reformatted to make it an os x only machine.
Basically what happens is that the whole system will crash. Sometimes I am still able to move the trackpad/mouse around, but am unable to click on anything; leaving me with a power button restart as my only recourse (typically the display remains unchanged only frozen, though sometimes the entire screen will go black. Neither instance prompts a notice from the machine itself).
This used to happen quite often, when browsing the internet on multiple windows, running a few apps (all activities that the machine previously handled quite well when it was young). I went through and deleted nearly everything off my computer, did a safe mode start to run diagnostics, and repaired disc permissions.
Those actions have mostly limited the freezing. However, when I go to play a game (mostly starcraft, although most recently world of warcraft) the game will play just fine for a while, and then the entire system will lock up again.
As I mentioned before I recently ordered snow leopard and plan on doing a clean install after wiping my HDD, but I want to know if the problem I described is a software/os x problem, or if the root lies deep within the hardware.
Any help I can get will be greatly appreciated.
