I got today for my MacBookPro 2010 i7 15" a NEC PA271W as a main display for image editing issues. In addition I baught from Apple a mini-DisplayPort to DVI Adapter to be able to connect the Monitor to my Macbook pro.
The problem now is that I am not able to use full resolution (2560x1440) because my system setup only gives me the opportunity to a max of 1920x???.

Any idea what could be the reason for this??

1920 x 1200 is the maximum you can push through the DVI interface. You need dual-link DVI to get higher resolutions. This limitation has nothing to do with Apple, it's a limitation of the DVI interface standard, and applies to Windows PeeCee's just the same.

This limitation is precisely the reason why Apple has abandoned the old DVI interface, in favor of the newer DisplayPort interface. (DisplayPort supports up to 3840 × 2160).

I'm guessing your adapter is only single-link DVI. If you want higher than 1920 x 1200:

You need this one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB571Z/A

NOT this one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB570Z/A
