Hi,

can i use 4K resolution with this setup (in the title)?
i have issues with that and the maximum resolution i can get is just 1920x1080. I am using HDMI cable.
can i use some software/hardware so my MacBook pro will send the 4k resolution to the LG monitor?
attached screenshots from the setup.

Thanks.

There are apps such as QuickRes that allow you to bypass Apple's limits on native display resolution, up to 3840x2400 or something. Personally, I feel that Apple engineered those barriers for a reason, and 4k might stressing the ol' 650m past her limit. The slapdash factory soldering combined with the heat generated operating in 4k all the time, is a recipe for a logic board replacement. Incidentally, I also have a first generation rMBP, same spec. (15", 2.3gHz., 8gb, 256gb); how is yours holding up under macOS Mojave?
UPDATE: QuickRes and similar apps no longer work with external displays after 10.12 Sierra, so that won't be of any use. This Github page offers instructions on how to achieve HiDPI for external displays:
