I'm not sure what to buy - Portability isn't a problem but i want to make sure the extra 600 some dollars is going to be worth it for the macbook pro 17"

For what do you want to use the MBP for? Will you computational needs profit from the extra screen real estate?

PS: I have the 17" MBP and also had a 2008 15" MBP with 1440 x 900 pixel and have a 20" iMac with 1680 x 1050 pixel. For my needs (video and photo manipulation), 1440 x 900 is not big enough. 1680 x 1050 is okay, but not comfortable. 1920 x 1200 is really good, but sometimes even that is too small.

I've had both. I just sold my 17 inch in favor of the 15 inch Hi-Res Anti-Glare. I can say you hardly lose anything IMO in terms of pixel real estate. I also have a Thunderbolt Display for home so that factored in the decision as well. I think it looks great and you hardly lose anything.

I'd go 15". 17" is a monster. For video editing you'll probably want an external monitor too. 1680x1050 is pretty good for a Laptop!
