Hi all!

I’m looking to get a new MacBook Pro 16 to hopefully replace my old MBP and Windows Desktop PC.

I usually spend most of my day working with project management tools, but I also do video editing using Premiere Pro and VFX design on After Effects.

My current MBP is the base 15 inch MR932B/A

:: 2.2GHz i7

:: 16 GB RAM

:: 256GB SSD

:: 4GB Radeon Pro 555X

My Windows PC specs are:

:: AMD Ryzen 7 2700 8 Core, 16 Thread - 4.1GHz Max Boost, 3.2GHz Base

:: GeForce® RTX 2070 8GB GDDR6 Graphics Card

:: 32 GB (4 x 8GB)

:: 1TB Crucial SSD

:: 120 GB Kingston SSD

I love this PC! Spec is perfect for what I need and works like a dream. However, I want to replace both systems with one high-end MBP for portability (I hot-desk a lot!)

Looking at Apple, I was thinking about this spec for an MBP 16 inch:

:: 2.4GHz 8‑core 9th‑generation Intel Core i9 processor, Turbo Boost up to 5.0GHz

:: 32GB 2666MHz DDR4 memory

:: AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 8GB of GDDR6 memory

:: 1TB SSD storage

$3,499.00 for the lot

On paper… this spec is better than my Windows PC. But I’ve never invested this kinda power in a portable before… so will my performance be as good as the PC, especially when running processor/GPU intensive apps? How much faster than my old MBP would it feel?!

Thanks for reading!

MacBook Pro will likely not run as well as your desktop machine. It will make more noise and graphics performance will be lower. I use a desktop with i9900K, 64 GB or ram, 2 TB SSDs, and RTX 2070 and 2080 GPUs. It crushes my 16 MBP when running Premier Pro, Audition, and Lightroom, and is very quiet. You just cannot beat top end graphics, drive, and CPUs components unhindered by the need to be portable.

But, MBP 16" is portable, and does not weight 15+ pounds and draw 800 watts of power. My MBP 16" configuration is the same as the one you list.

But, the 2019 16" MBP does run these products better than my 2018 MBP 15". Which ran these products faster than my 2015 MBP 15".
