I've had multiple 16" MBPs do the following:

  1. Machine will be fine, but randomly gets in a state where the display will go totally black (no output) when I activate an app that invokes the dGPU.
  2. If I kill or quit the app in question, the display will come back on.
  3. If I open a terminal using Spotlight and force the dGPU to OFF using pmset (typing blind), the display will come back on.
  4. Once the machine gets into this state, any and all apps which invoke the dGPU will exhibit the same behaviour.
  5. A reboot will fix the problem until the next time the machine randomly gets itself into this state.
Anyone else have the same issue? I suspect it's a driver-related issue with the new Navi Radeons.

Kind of.

If I connect a Dell monitor through HDMI to the 16” both displays go black. Disconnect screen all is normal again.

Same monitor works ok with my 2016, 15”, on Catalina. So yes, I think it is the Navi drivers.
