I was considering the purchase of the MacBook 16" & hooking it up to the LG 24" 4K monitor that Apple offers and that I already own. But after reading the comments and talking with Apple support and including the Apple rep at a local Best Buy store along with Best Buy employees, I made the decision to go with the MacBook Pro 13" instead. It seems very obvious to me that between Apple support, Best Buy employees and the Apple Rep when you bring up these issues of the 16" being noisy and heating up when hooked to an external monitor, it's like they have never heard of these issues before yet it's all over the internet that there is a problem but Apple is ignoring it. Apple support even went so far as to give me a 800 number to call so I could talk to an engineer. Not surprisingly, everyone suggested to just buy it because I could return it in 14 days if I had issues but who wants to go thru that hassle.
I decided after looking at refurbished models both 13" & 16" with the specs I wanted to go the safe route and I chose the MacBook Pro 13" 2.3 Ghz. Quad core i7, 32 Gb ram and 1 TB SSD. After just two days I can report there is no noticeable fan noise and any heat from the laptop would be considered just normal. I would love the 16" for the extra real estate when not using the external monitor but the 13" is certainly more portable and I feel good about my decision. Bottom line is decisions like this is about trade offs. There are pluses and minus to both laptops but the 13" won't give me any headaches.
