Is there no keys for backlit key brightness?

Without having to go to:

 > System Settings > Keyboard > Keyboard brightness > slider

Thanks. I meant is there a way to program a couple of top row keys to control backlit keyboard brightness say via a Function key combination?

Got it to work!

Here's the trouble-shoot for it...

  • disable the "adjust keyboard brightness in low light" setting
  • map f5 to illumination_down, f6 to illumination_up

Really dumb of Apple to change these to Dictation and Sleep mode

Discovered it myself, that this functionality is no longer there, when I got my M4 MBA. I don't understand why I can't use something like alt-f1 and alt-f2 for it. Enabling a toggle in Control Center or adding int to the menu bar and navigating there by mouse adds extra friction and clicks. Time to send a feature request to apple.
