There is a thread on swapping screens in the PB/MBP 15", to get a HD display, and was wondering if it was possible if you could get the HD display that was a BTO option in the SR 17" (1920*1200), instead of the standard one (1680*1050), and simply disconnect the whole assembly and swap them? I realize that to do this, I would have to get the exact same screen from the model, meaning getting a HD screen from a MBP 3,1 for a 3,1, a 4,1 for a 4,1, and making sure the backlight types match.

Wouldn't it be easier to trade or sell/buy to get the different model?

Was the high-res screen offered for your particular MacBook (MBP 3,1 or w/e)? If it was, find out the model of the LCD offered on the high-res model and try finding that exact model for sale. I can't say for certain that it will work, but I see no technical reason why it shouldn't.
