Hey guys I have a chance to pick up a Quad Core i7 17 inch model for $1140, or a 13 inch retina macbook pro with 256 gigs and 8 ram for $1100.
It'd be my travel device since I'm on my desktop most the time.
My question is should I shoot for the 13 inch since it will probably hold its value better?
I'd be happy with either device.

Well if you travel a lot, the 13in would be better obviously.
Unless you dont mind carrying a 20in 3kg aluminum box.

I carry my 17in for work reasons, I need the CPU power and extra RAM and space.
And if I didnt have to I wouldnt choose to.
First its heavy. 3kg 20+in size is annoying to carry around.

I use the 11in MBA for small work (notice the power difference) and its extremely light.
Depending on what you do, 11in MBA would be better for travel.
If the 2 are the only choices, I would go for the 13in rMBP.
But dont expect to do heavy load work.
For size and weight, you have to sacrifice the power.

17 inch MBP

This machine stands the test of time, I've had my first one since 2006 and she is still snappy and effective. Upgrading and future proofing are essential for a mobile machine, so I'd encourage you to go with that awesome deal for the 17" MBP, you wouldn't want to sell it unless you had a newer one come into your life, then you'd want another lucky person to own a 17" MBP.

The 13" rmb is completely useless, you may as well get an entry level 11" mba they are about the same.

Good luck to you!!

^_^

Well it is for travel, but it'd only be about once or twice a week.
I have rMBP now the 15 inch model.
This 3rd device is mainly for moving files and photos, back up device, and quick video editing on the go. I'm more concerned about the value as I will probably sell the device in 2-3 years.

Agree, for travelling the 17 inch is too big, go for the 13 inch rMBP

And yet there are people who claim the 15" is too large for portability... It's quite possible that there are people out there who don't consider the 17" too large and find 13" unusable for lack of screen real estate. OP - if it works for you, go for the 17".
