I recently bought a late 2011 17 MBP
It has 4gb of memory I am putting 16gb in it.

It has the 750gb standard drive it. I think that needs to be swapped out.

The people that have upgraded did you notice performance increase? How bout the heat?
Are you doing dual drives SSD and the standard in replacement of the super drive?

Did you go with standard SSD or hybrid?

I do run a couple virtual pc's on the MBP and they run like crap right now I am sure from the low memory. So I would like to say around the same size drive I guess.

So is it worth the money to upgrade?

I upgraded my 2011 17" MBP with 16GB RAM and installed 256GB SSD in main bay and moved original HDD to optibay. Huge difference! VM's run smooth in Parallels. If you do the dual drive setup, install SSD in main bay as many 2011 MBP's have issues with SATA III drives in optibay.

Do you notice a decrease in battery life and how is the heat?

No heat issues here. Battery life seems normal but I'm not a heavy battery user. At home or in hotels it's usually plugged in.

No heat issue at all and SSD sure did make my machine brand new.

Like in my sig, I have SSD+optibay HDD setup.
16GB 1600MHz RAM and USB3.0 Expresscard upgrade.

These are probably the most upgrade you can do for a 17in.
