I'm borrowing a friend's MBP 17" - it's the first Intel-based 2.16Ghz model
the specs show a native resolution of 1680x1050 (http://support.apple.com/kb/SP33), however his is only displaying at 1440x900 - the same as my 15"!

he bought the laptop used with OS X 10.5 installed, so i don't know if there are any incompatibilities there?

anyone know why the display settings list doesn't contain a higher available resolution?

oooookaaaaaay...

anyone own a 17" 2.16Ghz with 10.5 installed????

there were two version of it
highresolution or normal resolution

what do you mean by that? the spec link i listed above makes no mention of a lower native resolution. i've even googled, but haven't come up with anything.

obviously the graphics card supports this resolution. plus why would they release a 17" laptop with the same resolution as the 15"? isn't the whole idea more screen real estate?

then again, i'm still somewhat of a mac newbie, as is the owner of this laptop.

anyone else?

You sure your friend doesn't have a PowerBook?

Also you can change resolutions; have you tried that?

haha, yeah, i'm quite sure it's a macbook pro, 17" 2.16Ghz, ATI Radeon X1600 256MB. :)

and 1440x900 is the highest resolution listed in the listbox found by going to System Preferences > Displays and clicking on the Display tab.

Reset PRAM and try it again.

ATI drivers mean nothing, the drivers are built into the OS and the display in it supports up to 1680x1050.

If it's not then there's something amiss.
