I recently purchased a Macbook pro 06 2.16 Core duo as a back up coding machine. Its was great just as a secondary for about 6 months until recently the right fan stopped working and the machine over heats quickly. I installed smc fan control but the left fan can't make up the work by itself. Now I realize the machine is old so does that mean I should dump it and find a newer one or try to fix the fan my self. Ps the fan runs for about 48 bucks.

Where are you getting $48? I see them all over eBay for $10-15.

It's a time consuming repair but not exceptionally difficult. Lots of screws. Worth the effort, though.

Check the fan itself with a battery. If it doesn't work, replace it. If it does work, then it's the logic board, and probably not worth fixing.

I have been in your position with a 2006 MacBookPro and had a fan that does not work properly, I just purchased a replacement fan on eBay and replaced it myself, replacing parts in your MacBookPro is easy.
