So a friend has given me his 2008 MacBook pro 2.4 with the nVidia 8600 card to look at.

When you press the power button the sleep light comes on and stays on, Optical drive and hard drive spin up and fans stay on, It doesn't bong and there is no picture on the screen. Also if I remove the battery and try to run it on just AC it does nothing.

Does this sound like Graphics card or something worse, Would a reflow work?

Sounds you have to do some baking!

I have a 2008 that always had severe battery life issues and one day last year the backlight died out. I brought it in to the Apple store and they said it was subject to a recall for the GPU. They ended up replacing the entire logic board for free. Now if only they paid me for the 3 batteries the thing killed before that.

Heat gunned the cpu, gpu and northbridge, All seems ok at the moment but I'm gonna run it for a couple of weeks and see how it goes before I call it fixed.

Got some serious fan control going also to stop it from getting warm.
