macbook pro 2009 not recognizing external speakers

Hi everyone,

I unplugged my speakers after 4 years to clean them and after plugging them in again, ''sound'' in system preferences does not recognise them anymore.I am using El Capitan on a 2009 Macbook pro.

I tried all sorts of unplugging, restarting and resetting NVRAM, all to no avail...

Any help on the issue would be greatly appreciated!
