Hi, I've been using my MacBook Pro with a dead battery for two years, just off the powered by the mag safe. I use it as desktop so no need for a battery. Today the macbook has been shutting down, I noticed the light on the mag safe is on when the laptop is switched off, but when I power up the laptop up the light goes off and the laptop dies again. I put the MagSafe back in and the light comes back on. Any ideas?

Find a place where they can replace the battery of just buy one and install it yourself if the MB's model allows it. Also buy a new charger.

I have a 2009 I run in "desktop mode" and my charger is pretty finicky with the charging light as well. Though it doesn't shutdown while running unless it gets bumped, just might take reconnecting the charger to get it to power on to begin with. I think the magnets are wearing down in my charger connector (remember this being a known issue with mag safe chargers over time, at least the older versions). Honestly aftermarket batteries are only like $20 on eBay for my 2009 and super easy to swap (I've replaced just about every other part at one point or another). If your MBP is old enough, battery replacement might still be an easy DIY task of a few screws and unplugging the battery cable.

Hi Guys, To follow up I went to a mac repair shop this morning and they tried their magsafe 1 and it worked fine, so purchased a new one, and so far do good, thanks for your feedback.
