Hi.

my mac is getting old. It’s 2.4Ghz, 4 GB ram, Nvidia 320M 256MB mid2010.

Although I know i need to replace the battery and the fan.

I want to improve the overall performance as well.

what should I get? Ram/hard drive…?

Do I need to change the hit sink as well?

I’m on the budget so i try to prioritize.

thanks.

1. cheapest SSD drive due to sata2 limitation
2. at least 8gb ram , for 16gb ram ( OWC store available)
3. just clean CPU heat sink and use artic-mx4 thermal paste.
4. use OWC newer tech battery it’s worth, stay away eBay junk.

Get 16gb of ram here: 16gb ram
I just installed on my son's 2010 MBP 13.
Works great
you'll only save $15 to go with just 8gb of ram.

OWC charges too much for their ram
but their batteries are good

If you're really limited on SSD money and 120gb is enough
get this $20 SSD here

If you can spend $50 get this one: here

agree with cleaning heatsink/fan for sure

I've gone through the upgrade process. It is definitely worth it. I maxed out the RAM to 16gb and put a 500gb SSD drive in. I also used DosDude's CatlinaPatcher so that I'm running 10.15.4 currently. It runs great! Although I have been wanting to upgrade to a new Mac I really don't have a good reason to now. Maybe once the new ARM machines start coming out and it looks like there aren't issues, maybe then I will, but currently I am quite happy still using the 2010 MBP.

I have the plastic version of your machine, the 2010 white MacBook. Mine has 16GB of RAM and an SSD in it, and for general usage, it's a fine little computer. Get those few hardware upgrades, redo the thermal paste and clean dust out from the heatsink and fan, and you'll have a fine little Mac on your hands there!

As said above, an SSD and RAM will certainly help improve the speed of your machine. But, in my opinion, an SSD is more important than RAM for speeding up a machine. If you're on a tight budget I'd recommend upgrading to an SSD before you upgrade your RAM.

I agree with all the above statements. I did the above upgrades except I did use a WD 1TB Sata3 SSD since they are downward compatible, it will just operate at Sata2 speeds.
